Old School 4th Edition
Dungeons & Dragons

Welcome to the campaign!

To join us, drop a line to keith@aerohobbiesgames.com. You'll need a 1st level 4th edition character from Players Handbook 1, 2 or 3 (and email a copy to me as well). A 28mm figure to represent your character will help.

Truly a Dark Age

In a forgotten corner of a fallen empire, the once proud city of Fallcrest awaits the mercy blow of fate. With the gaping holes in her walls nearing a century old, clearly it won't take another invading Orc army to finish her off. Monsters lurk her darker precincts. Her marketplace is as often as not the scene of mayhem and carnage. Every day someone goes missing.

Add to this the terrible weight of ignorance and poverty that crushes her citizens. Few are they who are learned or enlightened or wealthy. Poor in knowledge, the commoners wallow in superstition as well as filth. Poor in spirit, they are petty, avaricious and cruel. Poor in silver, some literally lack clothing and some are themselves property.

Those of the high town are hardly better off, except perhaps in silver.

A Clarion Call

A band of heroes has rallied to the banner of Knight Faraday, an officer of the Fallcrest Guild of Heroes. Already their efforts have been noticed...

Recently, an Elven Ranger called Aelar has been tracking the Drow Warband that destroyed his village and stole his legacy. Worse, the mysterious item they absconded with holds the key to dangerous mystic power!

Old School 4th Edition

The mechanics of the game are WotC's D&D 4th Ed. Combat is played out with miniatures on the table. 'Old School' means whatever that is shuffling towards you in the darkness may very well eat you to death. There are definitely things you should not fight, places you should not go, risks you should not take...yet.

'Old School' also means it's an RPG, it's only limited by our imagination. If your character has a goal, geas, wyrd, doom or fate, we can at least see him on his way. For instance, there are a great number of magic items spoken of in legend. Like the mighty blade of Trenigar the Ranger, hero of the Bloodspear War. His guerrilla tactics after the disaster at Gardmore slowed the orc army enough to allow hundreds to escape Fallcrest. As long ago as it was, there may be clues to the whereabouts of that sword: perhaps an arcane text or perhaps secret knowledge handed down or perhaps an elderly veteran of a long-lived race who may have witnessed the very event.

Campaign notes

Trade

Fallcrest sits at the cross of three trading routes: the King's Road, the Dwarven Road and the Nentir river. While more items are available here than anywhere else in the vale, the chance finding a particular item - and it's cost - depend on goods coming in via caravans and boats. Bandits, monsters and other hazards reduce the amount of trade in the town and axiomatically increases prices.

All mundane items in the PHB are still available and at listed cost. Finding a particular item might require a visit to several merchants, but generally it is no problem. Magic items are considerably harder to find.

Streetwise DC by item level:
  1. 20
  2. 21
  3. 21
  4. 22
  5. 22
  6. 23
  7. 23
  8. 24

The supply of items may be increased through role-play. For instance, Pawn has brought in a dire wolf pelt for Teldorthan the armorer, enough for two suits of magical hide armor. Not only will Pawn get the armor he wanted, but also he has increased the supply in the market.
